A Local’s Guide to Princess Tiana’s New Orleans
A Local’s Guide to Princess Tiana’s New Orleans by Brandi Taylor, Travel Agent & College of Disney Knowledge graduate.
If you’re considering a trip to Louisiana and you’re a Disney fan like me, then you’re going to love this! Step inside the world of The Princess and the Frog to create your own story amidst the music and culture of New Orleans.
1. Beignets at Café du Monde
Start your day at Café du Monde, a local treasure since 1862. Sip on chicory coffee and savor warm beignets, just like Tiana makes in the movie. The powdered sugar dusting and fluffy interiors make these treats a true Louisiana delicacy.
My tips: Be sure to visit the location on Decatur across from Jackson Square for the quintessential experience. Get there right when they open, as there will be a line down the block for most of the day. And just trust me on this: don’t wear dark colored clothing unless you want to look like a reverse Dalmatian all day.
2. Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo
Dr. Facilier was “the Shadow Man” so perhaps Marie Laveau was a “shadow woman”? This mystical shop is located in what was once the home of the second VooDoo Queen of New Orleans. Learn about the city's spiritual traditions, explore voodoo artifacts, and appreciate the cultural significance of this ancient practice in Louisiana.
3. Oak Alley Plantation
Step back into the world of Charlotte and Big Daddy La Bouff by touring Oak Alley Plantation. Immerse yourself in the grandeur of this historic mansion, and walk down the incredible oak-lined path that leads up to the big house.
4. Swamp Tour
Escape to the captivating bayous with a swamp tour. Led by local guides, witness the beauty of cypress trees, Spanish moss, and wildlife. Experience the enchanting allure of Mama Odie's domain in the heart of Louisiana's natural landscapes. My tip: If you’d like a chill vibe, opt for a pontoon boat. If you’d like a bit of speed, an air boat is the thing for you.
5. Ghost Tour
The specters Dr Facilier unleashes to search for Prince Naveen are certainly not the only otherworldly creatures roaming the streets of New Orleans. Join a ghost tour through the mysterious French Quarter, where history and hauntings intertwine. Discover the ghostly tales of voodoo priestesses and haunted mansions, immersing yourself in the eerie side of New Orleans' past.
6. River Boat Cruise
Instead of riding down the river on a piece of bark, I’d recommend checking out the Steamboat Natchez and the Creole Queen. Both paddlewheels offer Jazz cruises! As you drift through the gentle waters, feel the echoes of Tiana and Naveen's romantic journey as you admire the city skyline.
My tip: If you see a Jazz musician dressed up as a gator… just know he’s a pretty fun guy.
7. St Louis Cemetery No.1
Tour the setting of the fight scene between Tiana and Dr. Facilier at the historic St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Wander among centuries-old tombs and mausoleums, hearing stories of voodoo priestesses and legendary figures that shaped New Orleans. Fun Fact: Remember the Second Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau? Well her mother holds the title of “First” and her resting place can be found here! Another fun one? Nicolas Cage has a Pyramid Tomb reserved for his final resting place here.
8. Mardi Gras World
Get up close and personal with the same kind of float Charlotte (almost) got married on. Immerse yourself in the vibrant hues and festive spirit of Mardi Gras at the Mardi Gras World museum. Admire dazzling costumes, intricate floats, and learn about the cultural significance of this extravagant celebration that Tiana and Charlotte loved.
9. EAT
Of course the food is where I’ll wrap up this list, just as the movie ends with Tiana’s realized dream of owning a restaurant. There are SO many wonderful options, but I’ll only list a few here.
For something upscale, Commander’s Palace has been a New Orleans landmark since 1983. Be sure to check the dress code before you go, and I highly recommend making reservations.
For a more casual option, Mother’s Restaurant has been around since 1938 and has a delicious array of options from Po’ Boy and etouffee, to Jambalaya and Gumbo. They even have a Gluten Free and Vegetarian menu posted right on their website. No reservations are accepted here, so be sure to arrive well before you’re actually hungry.
To grab-and-go like a local, you have to stop by Central Grocery for a muffuletta. This third-generation store has been operating since 1906. Just be sure to check how VERY large the portions are before you order one for each member of our party!
As you follow in the footsteps of Princess Tiana, my hope is that you discover the soul of New Orleans – a city that dances to the rhythm of jazz, tells stories through its cuisine, and captivates with its unique blend of history and magic. Let the spirit of Louisiana guide you on
this unforgettable journey while you create memories fit for a true bayou royal!
