The Best Time to Visit Walt Disney World, according to a former Cast Member
By Joel Parker
Walt Disney World is one of the most magical destinations in the world, offering unique experiences throughout the year. Each season brings its own charm, from culinary festivals to holiday magic. However, picking the right time to visit depends on your preferences.
Fall: A Culinary Adventure and Perfect Weather
Best Time to Visit: September - November
Fall is my favorite time of year to visit Walt Disney World. It is especially fantastic for those who want to enjoy pleasant weather, lower crowd levels, and some of the park's best seasonal events.
Highlights:
EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival: One of the most popular events of the year, this festival runs from mid-July to mid-November and showcases global cuisines and live entertainment.
Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend: Held in early November, this event is a favorite among fitness enthusiasts and first-time runners. From limited edition character meet-and-greets to an incredible post-race party, this is an event not to miss.
Lower Crowds: Fall is less busy, especially after Labor Day and before Thanksgiving. It's easier to navigate the parks, book dining reservations, and enjoy shorter wait times for popular attractions.
Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party: At this limited engagement event you’ll experience a special Halloween-themed parade, fireworks, trick-or-treating, plus meet some of your favorite Disney villains.
Why You Should Go in Fall: If you want a more relaxed experience with cooler weather and fewer crowds, combined with great seasonal festivals, fall is your time to visit.
Winter: Holiday Magic and Festive Spirit
Best Time to Visit: Late November - December
Winter at Walt Disney World is nothing short of magical. From mid-November through December, the parks transform into a winter wonderland. However, timing your trip wisely is crucial to avoid crowds.
Highlights:
Holiday Decor: The parks are decked out with Christmas decor, including gigantic Christmas trees, intricate decorations, and lifesize gingerbread houses. You'll feel the Christmas spirit throughout the resort.
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party: Held on select nights in November and December, this after-hours event in Magic Kingdom offers a festive parade, holiday fireworks, and special character meet-and-greets. It's an ideal way to celebrate the season with a sprinkle of Disney magic.
Ringing in the New Year: Walt Disney World is one of the most unique places to welcome the New Year. EPCOT and Magic Kingdom host the most elaborate New Year’s Eve events, with special fireworks displays. The parks are packed during this time, but the energy and excitement are incredible.
Crowd Considerations: While early December can be a quiet time to visit, Thanksgiving week and the Christmas-to-New-Year stretch are among the busiest times of the year. Parks can reach full capacity and wait times for popular rides can be long. If you're looking for the holiday magic without the overwhelming crowds, aim to visit in early to mid-December.
Cooler Weather: Temperatures in winter can be surprisingly cool, ranging from the 50s to 70s during the day. While it rarely gets freezing, evenings and mornings can be chilly, so pack accordingly.
Why You Should Go in Winter: If you love the holiday season and want to experience Walt Disney World at its most festive, winter is perfect. Just be mindful of the busy holiday weeks if you prefer a more peaceful visit.
Spring: Blooming Flowers and Spring Break Excitement
Best Time to Visit: March - May
Spring at Walt Disney World brings milder temperatures and blooming flowers everywhere you look. However, it can also be a busier time due to spring break vacations, especially in March and April.
Highlights:
EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival: Running from March through July, this festival features breathtaking Disney themed topiaries, outdoor kitchens, and concerts.
Spring Break Crowds: School spring break schedules bring higher crowd levels, especially in March and early April. Be prepared for longer wait times and busier parks, though visiting in May can give you the same experience with fewer people.
Springtime Surprise Race Weekend: Typically held in April, is another opportunity for runners to participate in races through the parks, with themed medals and entertainment along the way.
Why You Should Go in Spring: If you love flowers and milder weather, spring is a lovely time to visit. Just try to avoid peak spring break weeks for a less crowded experience.
Summer: Sunshine and Splashing Fun
Best Time to Visit: June - August
Summer at Walt Disney World is a popular time for families on vacation, but it comes with its challenges. Florida's summer heat is no joke, and the parks can be busy, especially in July. However, if you're prepared for the warm weather and want to take advantage of longer park hours, summer can be a fun time to visit.
Highlights:
Summer Heat: Temperatures in summer can soar above 90°F, with high humidity levels, so staying hydrated and taking breaks in air-conditioned spaces is crucial. Be prepared for daily afternoon thunderstorms, which are common in Florida during the summer months.
Water Parks: If you're visiting in the summer, Disney's water parks—Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon—offer a refreshing way to beat the heat. These parks are filled with water slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools, making them a perfect addition to a summer trip.
Extended Hours: During the summer, the parks often stay open later, giving you more time to enjoy the attractions, especially after the sun sets and temperatures cool down.
Why You Should Go in Summer: If you're traveling with kids on summer break and can handle the heat, summer is a great time to visit. The longer hours and water park options help balance the high temperatures and crowds.
Every season at Walt Disney World brings something magical, and the best time to visit depends on what you're looking for in a trip. Whether it's the cool breezes of fall, the holiday magic of winter, the blooming beauty of spring, or the sunny fun of summer, Walt Disney World offers a unique experience year-round.
